It seems that most people have one of two reactions to New Years Resolutions. People who have them, and people who say they don't need to have them. I have gone through years where I didn't feel like there was anything I needed to change, and was insulted if someone thought I did. Other times, I have made resolutions and failed. Even rarer are the times when I make a resolution, and succeed in it. Six years ago, my wife and I quit smoking ciggys. It was hard, terribly hard, but with our mutual support we were able to kick the habit (and have been successful for the most part, as I lit a smoke for a friend once after I quit, but it tasted so nasty that I never wanted to do it again).
I think this is one of those years I need to put something in writing, and try to stick it. So, here are my New Years resolutions for 2008:
1. Manage my World of Warcraft time better. This was a big bone of contention between myself and Jenn for most of 2007, especially after I took over duties as an officer in my guild, and all the drama that happened after the change. Frankly I spend too much time playing, but I need to play some as I am the charismatic leader of the guild. So I need to balance it better. I am already locked into raiding on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I will cut out the regular Saturday raids for sure. Also, I will try to cut out some of my weeknight playing.
2. Manage my money better. 2007 was another crappy year for our finances, and we are no better (or worse) off than we were at this time last year. I had thought that I was the problem in managing our money, so I ceded control of our finances to the missus. We haven't changed our habits one bit. I need to take control back, and work together with her to try to balance our money, and save 5% of our income.
3. Find some new friends. In 2006-7, Jenn and I lost almost all of our real life friends. James and Sandy had a baby, then no time for us. Starlite backstabbed us, and took my job. Geoff and Ali got weird after our group sex thing at Ren Fest, and cut off contact because of a lewd joke. We need to work harder at gaining some new friends who are into the kinds of things we are, and want to be close (not sexual, I think I am done with that... as I will cover in a later post). Let me also say, that I love and respect all my online friends, and I resolve to continue those relationships as well.
4. Play D&D more. I really enjoyed running the D&D game, and I think my players enjoyed it as well, with at least one exception. I want to continue playing, and hopefully having fun, even if it means just having Sabrina and Jenn as characters.
5. Find a job in a comic book shop, use the money I make from there to build my comic business. My lifelong dream is to have my own comic book shop. I need to make this happen, as its not going to be handed to me on a silver platter. I need to find a part time job on the weekends/evenings at a comic book shop. Then use my pay from the store to buy comics to sell on eBay for a profit. This may mean sitting on them for months or years, but a long term plan is better in my opinion.
I plan on touching base with this post over the coming year to see where I am on these things.
